Brooklands is Go!

On 21st July this year and after some ten years of negotiations and setbacks, Elmbridge Council has granted permission for the redevelopment of Cobham Bus Museum’s existing Redhill Road site as a Nursing Home.

This permission is linked to the planning permission already received for the new Museum building on the Brooklands Museum World heritage site.

In theory, the Secretary of State could veto the Elmbridge decision for re-development of the Redhill Road site but informed sources suggest this is highly unlikely and would be a most unusual step.

For all of the volunteers and Trustees, past and present, involved in the project, this is the culmination of many long hours of work spread over a period of ten years. Having surmounted many setbacks, challenges and disappointments, we are now firmly on the home straight.

A meeting of the Bus Museum’s Trustees held on 7th July 2010, in anticipation of planning permission being granted, resulted in unanimous agreement that we should now formally set the relocation plan in motion.

As at the date of this announcement, there are legal formalities to be completed (signing of the lease and operating agreement between Brooklands and LBPT Ltd), but we are not expecting any significant issues.

The whole operation is on a "turn-key" approach. The developers of the Redhill Road site will clear the site at Brooklands and construct the new Museum building to our design. It is only when our collection can be housed within the new premises that the clearing of the land and demolition of our existing building will commence.

So, when will things start? Clearing our new site at Brooklands is likely to begin in September this year and, if all goes well, the new building will be ready for fitting out in the Spring of next year, with July 2011 as the target date for the official opening of the Cobham London Bus Museum.

There is now a lot of work to be done. Already some of the Cobham fleet have been stored off-site so that space can be created to sort out the many spare parts currently held around the building. Any spares surplus to our requirements will be sold off later in the year so, if you have an RF, RT, or RM, look out for the sale dates on www.lbpt.org.

Finally, if you are a Cobham member and would like to get involved with the move by lending a hand, then Steve Edmunds is waiting to hear from you.

2011 will be an important year in Cobham Bus Museum’s rich history, so look out for further updates as the project unfolds.
