Volunteering at Cobham Bus Museum
Cobham Bus Museum has no paid employees and all the work, of every kind, is done by volunteers drawn from the ranks of our Members. We hope that the following information about volunteering will interest you and, if you are not yet a Member, lead to your joining us.

Volunteers at Cobham cover a very wide range of tasks and we are looking for most of the skills needed to operate a medium-sized business as well as a transport museum. We are an inclusive, friendly organisation and welcome young and old, male and female, working and retired. The trustees and officers are all volunteers themselves and we recognise the importance of looking after our 'human resources' and ensuring that all of them find fulfilment and enjoy themselves.

The Museum has strict rules to ensure that we operate to the highest safety standards and all volunteers will receive the necessary information and training to ensure that they understand the correct procedures for their work, the potential risks they may encounter and how those risks can be eliminated or mitigated.

Once we move to our fantastic new building on the Brooklands complex in late 2010, we will be open to the public every day and the opportunities for volunteering will become even more wide-ranging and interesting.

Take a look through the following list to see whether there is anything to whet your appetite (you are free to choose more than one!):

  • Stewards & Guides - dealing with visitors to the museum, helping them with enquiries and providing guided tours.
  • Displays & Interpretation - assisting the Curator with the presentation, maintenance and rotation of the displays.
  • Conservation - cataloguing and conserving the Museum's small artefacts, receiving and accessioning new items, providing access to non-display items by special arrangement.
  • Archives & Research Library - maintaining the Museum's archives & library, undertaking specific research projects and providing access by special arrangement.
  • Education - dealing with educational visits and providing guided tours for educational purposes. (CRB checks may be required in some cases.)
  • Office & Administration - staffing the Museum office and dealing with administrative matters, managing the cleaners, dealing with telephone and email enquiries etc.
  • Marketing & Publicity - attending outside events to market the Museum, distributing publicity materials, assisting with maintenance of the web-site and the production of the Cobham Magazine and e-newsletter etc.
  • Shop & Commercial Activities - assisting with online sales, mail-order and taking the Shop to outside events, sales to Members, researching new products for the Shop and other commercial activities in the trading company such as bus private hire.
  • Finance - banking and book-keeping, preparing financial reports etc.
  • Membership & Volunteers - Membership records, recruiting new Members, lapsed Member follow-up, recruiting, training and managing new volunteers.
  • Fundraising - running fundraising events and appeals, providing Museum artefacts for film & TV, making grant applications, recruiting and managing corporate members and major benefactors, selling donated and surplus items.
  • Company Secretarial - Minute-taking for various boards and committees, assisting with insurance and H&S matters, PCV Operator Licences and associated requirements.
  • Vehicle Maintenance - washing and cleaning the vehicles, mechanical and body maintenance and overhaul, minor repairs etc.
  • Vehicle Restoration - assisting with all levels of restoration from straightforward stripping, painting, polishing etc to major mechanical and bodywork rebuilds and electrical work.
Would you like to get involved at Cobham in one or more of the above activities? You would be more than welcome. As a first step, please email our Volunteer Co-ordinator stating which activity(ies) you are interested in and, if you would like us to phone you, your phone number and when it would be convenient to call you.

If you're willing to volunteer at the new Museum, once we move to Brooklands, please complete this form, and send it to us.
